Born 94 years ago to John and Barbara Hemmert, Helen was the youngest and last surviving of eight children – Peter, Anna, Elizabeth, Katherine, Barbara, John and Nicholas.
Leaving her farm home in Elberta, Alabama in 1943 for Mobile, she served during World War II as a teletype operator at Brookley Air Force Base until war’s end. She married and raised four children and enjoyed a long career with Sears Roebuck.
Sustained by her deep and abiding faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, she possessed a talent for making order out of chaos as demonstrated over many years raising four children alone. She delighted in showing her love for others through her culinary talents and craft making expertise. She had a particular love for family celebrations, and Christmas was paramount.
She is survived by three sons, Ron (Hope Tallman), David (Greer), Len (Ali), one daughter Valerie (Steve), grandchildren, Tracy, Trent (Donna), Brandt (Amy), Nicholas (Emily), Connor, Mark, Ashley, Stephanie (Markus), Sarah (Chris), Katie, Jennifer (Colin), Lindsey, Brandon, ten great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her laughter and remarkable spirit for travel, adventure and her contagious zest for living will serve as hallmarks of a life which was a blessing to all who knew her.
