

Hybart Quimby – a native of Monroe County, AL, and a long-time resident of Mobile, was born October 21, 1925. He passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2011, at his residence in Mobile. Mr. Quimby attended Auburn Polytechnic Institute (which later became Auburn University). During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy as Yeoman 1st Class, stationed in Pensacola, FL. He started in the LP gas business with Delaney Butane Company of Mobile and joined National Butane Company in 1948. In 1979, Cal-Gas bought National Butane. He retired in 1991 after a distinguished career. After the death of his wife Leila in 1997, he became active in the Widowed Persons Service of Greater Mobile, serving as a grief counselor and later as treasurer. He was a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church and Chickasaw Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Palmer and Ola Lambert Quimby; brothers, Gilbert and Owen Quimby; sister, Louise Quimby Doherty; and his beloved wife of 52 years, Leila Powell Quimby. Mr. Quimby is survived by six children: Reggie Quimby (Karen) of Montgomery, AL; Brenda Quimby Haynes (Ken) of Savannah, GA; Randy Quimby (Terry) of Charleston, SC; Ricky Quimby (Deborah) of N. Richland Hills, TX, Becky Quimby Bailey (Mike) of Mobile, and Russell Quimby (Stacy) of Urbandale, IA; 16 grandchildren: Jason Quimby (Susana) of Miami, FL, Matthew Quimby (Tori) of Franklin, TN, Michael Quimby (Rachel) of Montgomery, Robert Crozier of Orlando, FL, Kendra Stolee (Andrew) of Las Vegas, NV, Palmer Quimby of Charleston , Kathleen Quimby of Charleston, Jennifer Valdez (Ben) of Clovis, CA, Joshua Quimby of N. Richland Hills, Stephanie Garcia of Denton, TX, Jessica York of Shreveport, LA, Frank Chaloupka, Jr. (Kasi) of Plano, TX, Tracey Chaloupka of White Settlement, TX, Brandon Bailey of Mobile, Hannah Quimby of Urbandale, and Katie Quimby of Urbandale; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends, including his special friend, Sally Little. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Atria-Regency and to Odyssey Hospice. Also, special thanks to Augustine Slack. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Mobile Memorial Gardens on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the service hour.
