
She was a native of Tekoa in southern Monroe County, Alabama. She had 3 older brothers and a younger sister who died in infancy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Claudia Watson Thames and William Thomas Thames who lived to age of 101.
Iris moved to Mobile in 1941 with her husband Willard Chester Hanks and their 2 children Bobby and Shirley. Except for 7 years, she lived the remainder of her life in Mobile. She was married to Willard for 71 years until his death in 2000. She was a member of the Creekwood Church of Christ and was a frequent hostess for church activities in earlier years. Her primary interests were her family and church work, but in addition she was an excellent cook and interested in gardening.
Mrs. Hanks is survived by her son Robert Hanks and daughter Shirley Hanks Marion. Surviving grand-children are Lynsey Marion, Matt Hanks and Katherine Hanks Pugh and surviving great-grandchildren are Emma and Sally Hanks and Houser Pugh.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 26, 2010 from 6-8 PM at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 AM Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Creekwood Church of Christ. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 AM until service time. Memorial contributions can be made to the Creekwood Church of Christ, 109l Schillinger Road, Mobile, AL 36695.
