
Capt. James Edward Barry, age 92. Born on February 22, 1919, in the small town of Whistler, Alabama and died on Friday, January 13, 2012. He was the son of Joseph Edward Barry and Tillye Thompson Barry. He graduated at the early age of 16 from Murphy High School, Class of 1935. He was employed at Waterman Steamship Company. At the age of 23 he joined the United States Merchant Marine and attended US Maritime Commission School during WW II. He was a Seaman and Officer in the Atlantic Theatre of Operations during WW II. After the war his sea going career continued and he became Master of Waterman Steamship Vessels in 1951. In 1964 he formed J.E. Barry Marine Surveying Company. He retired in 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Joseph and Tillye Thompson Barry, and his wife of 49 years, Gloria Matherne Barry. He is survived by his four children, Ms. Cindy Coffman, Mrs. Tillye (Chris) Semple, Mr. Tim Barry and Capt. Robert Barry, and three grandchildren, Ms.Cullen Coffman, Mr. Henry Semple, and Cadet William Semple. Memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2012 4-6 PM at Radney Funeral Home.Arrangements under the direction of Radney Funeral Home-Mobile, Mobile, AL.
