
Dr. Sewell was a native of Tuscaloosa and a graduate of Tuscaloosa High School. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and graduated from the University of Alabama. He graduated medical school from Tulane University and started his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, only to see it interrupted by the Korean War, as he as drafted into the United States Navy as a Lieutenant. Upon completion of his military service he returned to Charity Hospital to complete his residency, where he served as Chief Resident n the OB/GYN department.
In 1958, he moved to Mobile and started his practice with Dr. Raymond Abel. He had one of the largest private practices in Mobile, for 47 years, until his retirement in 2005. During this time, he delivered more than 10,000 babies! He was loved by his patients and was known for his kindness and gentleness.
In addition to being a member of local and national medical societies, he was a member of several Mobile mystic societies, a longstanding member of the Country Club of Mobile, where he could be found on the golf course every Wednesday and Saturday. And was also an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, but in his later years, preferred being in the woods and watching the wildlife.
He was preceded in death by his father, major league baseball hall of famer, Joseph “Joe” W. Sewell and by his mother, Willie V. Sewell; his brother, Doctor Joseph W. Sewell, Jr; his first wife and mother of his children, Martha Jane Roche Sewell and by his son, James Wesley “Wes” Sewell. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anne H. Sewell’ one sister, Mary Sue Parnell; three children, Jeffrey R. Sewell (Kim), Rebecca Sewell Slade and Stephen T. Sewell (Kim); step daughters, Suzanne C. Scott 9Byron) and Lori C. Burch (Daniel); grandchildren, James W. “Jimmy” Sewell, III (Stephanie), Kathryn Sewell Coletta (Chris), Cooper Sewell, Jennah Adele King Waggoner (Chet), James Anthony (Tony) Slade, Stephen Sewell, Audrey Jane Sewell, Lillian Frances (Lilli) Lawrence and Harlan Toole Schwall (Chris), as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Private, graveside service was held at Pinecrest Cemetery on Monday, April 27, 2020.
A Celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Mobile SPCA of the American Cancer Society.
