

James Jeral Smithgall, 90, was born February 18, 1931, in Perry, Florida, to the late Benjamin and Netta Brigman Smithgall. He was called to his Heavenly home on February 13, 2022, in Mobile, Alabama in the comfort of his own home. Jeral earned a Mechanical Engineering degree through the University of Florida. He served his grateful nation by enlisting in the United States ARMY. Jeral provided for his family as a Construction Engineer for International Paper Company. In his spare time Jeral designed, built, and flew radio control airplanes. He enjoyed fishing and camping with friends and family. Jeral had a talent for playing the piano and guitar. He always cherished the time spent with family and friends.
Jeral was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Dolores Hicks Smithgall; two brothers: Durwin Smithgall, Todd Smithgall; and one sister, Monetha Smithgall Baldwin.
Left to cherish Jeral’s wonderful memories will be two sons: Jerry Smithgall and wife Dawn Tola, Joel Smithgall and wife Susan; one grandson, Matt Atkins and wife Lauren; one granddaughter, Emily Puckett and husband Matt; one great-granddaughter, Emma Atkins; along with many extended family members and a host of wonderful friends.

The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Jeral’s primary caregiver, Keke Evans; Covenant House Hospice nurse, Shauna Gibbs; friends and neighbors: Les Moore, Gene and Kay Barnes, and Voncile Orr; all those who provided services to Dad through Covenant House, the nurses and doctors at Ascension Providence Hospital; for the professional care, concerns, prayers, friendships and condolences during our great time of need.
