Jim Warren was born in Henryetta, OK on May 13, 1930, and was raised in Wichita, Kansas by loving parents Geraldine Caldwell Warren and William Bland Warren. He attended Wichita High School East and graduated with honors from Wichita State University in 1950. While at WSU, he met and married Mary Ann Carpenter (d.2014), and began a family of four children: Richard Bruce Warren (d.2013), Jamie Warren Corkran of Williamsbug, VA, James Douglas Warren of Boulder, CO and Allison Warren of Gloucester, MA.
He pursued a graduate education in Medicine, earning an M.D. with honors from the University of Kansas in 1954. He put his new degree to immediate use, serving as a doctor in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1956, achieving the rank of Captain while stationed in Mobile, AL. He continued his medical studies at the University of Nebraska, completing a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1960, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1961.
After completing a Fellowship in Endocrinology in 1964, he joined the staff of K.U. Medical center. He built a distinguished career in academic medicine, serving as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University (Barnes-Jewish Hospital) in St. Louis, MO, from 1971 to 1989. He was elected a member of the American Gynecological Society and the American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in the 1970’s and served as the President of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation in 1984. During his career he authored multiple research papers, with a particular focus on Reproductive Endocrinology.
In addition to his full professional life, he was an avid traveler, dancer and boat lover. After his retirement he moved to Dauphin Island, AL to be close to the ocean. He married Margie Warren, a former teacher from St. Louis, in 2004. He is survived by Margie, his sister Kay Ross of Oklahoma City, 3 children and 9 grandchildren.
