Jerry Angus McDougald, 86, of Mobile, Alabama, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, succumbing to several health issues including Alzheimer’s Disease. Born January 27, 1939, in Geneva, Alabama, he was the son of Coley and Willie Mae (Nichols) McDougald.
Jerry graduated from Geneva High School in 1957, before pursuing higher education at the University of Minnesota for two years. He then transferred to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in education and embarked on a career as an educator. Jerry later went on to obtain a Master’s Degree from the University of South Alabama.
In 1965, Jerry was introduced to Sharon Bryars by a mutual friend. Jerry and Sharon were married for more than 58 years and enjoyed a full and rich life together. They were blessed with two daughters, Heather McDougald and Holly (McDougald) Sachs, along with Holly’s husband, Tyson Facer, and three cherished grandchildren, Isabella Sachs, Liam Sachs, and Keith Sachs.
As an educator and coach, Jerry’s impact on the lives of his students was immeasurable. He taught and coached at Semmes High School before continuing his career at Semmes Middle School, where he retired in 1989. Known affectionately as “Coach,” Jerry remained connected to many of his former students who continued to greet him with that title, whether in the Semmes Walmart, at “The Pit,” or in his post-retirement travels to Utah, Alaska, and various cruise ship destinations. His passion for teaching and coaching left a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who knew him.
Jerry’s family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, an organization that Jerry supported in honor of his own personal experiences with the disease. https://alzfdn.org/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAoJC- CSARIsAPhdfSiw_VZGQPyGZXbJOcuIhzpeCSs5PH7F_2QwntdrRBULjcaM-sNVAwgaAvs4EALw_wcB
