

Joseph Marion “J.M.” Weldon, Jr., a native of Mobile and resident of Point Clear, Alabama, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013. Weldon, born September 14, 1927, was the son of the late Joseph Marion Weldon, MD and the late Mrs. C. Judson Hays. Mr. Weldon attended Murphy High School, Riverside Military Academy and graduated from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Following graduation, he returned to Mobile to begin his insurance career which spanned 45 years. Weldon was married to Margaret Lane Parker McMillan Weldon of Mobile for 39 years until her death in 1989. He is also pre-deceased by his siblings: Portia Elizabeth Weldon Kent, Marian France Toner, and James Horace Weldon.
Throughout his life, J.M. Weldon was a family man and an avid sportsman who relished the chance to enjoy God's creation: whether flying, hunting, fishing, sailing or playing golf. He was a member of Springhill Presbyterian Church where he served on the Session and was honored with the title Elder Emeritus. He loved his church and served as Chairman of the Building Committee, and Chairman of the Renovation Committee. Weldon was one who continuously gave back to the community and served as a Board Member of the Presbyterian Children’s Home for many years. In addition, Weldon was a member Mobile Yacht Club, Fairhope Yacht Club, the Country Club of Mobile, and Lakewood Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife Merle Leonard Wharton Weldon of 23 years. He departed secure in confidence and pride in his daughter Elizabeth Lane “B’Beth” Weldon and granddaughter Margaret McMillan McGehee. He further leaves behind his beloved nieces and nephews and step-children: Dusty Wharton Walton (Norman), Andy Ray Wharton (Susan), and Cary Wharton (Lynn).
Services for Mr. Weldon will be held Wednesday, December 4, 2013 with a family graveside service at 10 o’clock at Mobile Memorial Gardens, followed by a Memorial Service Celebrating His Life at 11 o’clock in the Chapel of Springhill Presbyterian Church. The family would like to thank the Honorary Pallbearers who touched his life in such a special way: Dr. Jeff Beard, Russell Ladd, Ferd Zundel, Larry Sims, and his dear golfing buddies from the Lakewood Men’s Group, the “Mulligans,” and “Super Seniors.”
