Theresa and Samuel Marlowe in Mobile, Al. She accepted Christ as a child at the Union
Missionary Baptist Church in Mobile, Ala. and lived her life according to the word of
God. Joycelyn spent her early childhood years with her father, paternal grandmother,
Rosie Marlowe, and big brother, then later teen years were spent with her mother,
younger sister and brother.
Joycelyn attended public schools in Mobile and graduated from Mobile County
Training School in 1960, a year earlier than her original class. She was loved by all of
her teachers and acknowledged as a young lady with a very bright future. She was very
well spoken and once dreamed of becoming an English Teacher. As a result, she did a
lot of public speaking and was often featured in school and church plays. Joycelyn
excelled in everything she was involved in and received numerous professional awards
and leadership certificates in the marketplace in ministry.
Joycelyn fell in love and married her high school sweetheart, Lindsey Parker, on
August 25, 1961 at Yorktown Baptist Church, Mobile, Al. Since her childhood, she
always prayed that God would allow her to give birth to 1 boy and 1 girl. God
granted the desires of her heart. To this union, a beautiful baby girl, Vickie
Valencia (December 29, 1962) and a handsome baby boy, Victor Vernado (May
18, 1967) were born. She loved Vickie and Victor with every fiber of her being and
made no apologies for spoiling them. However, the best gift she gave her
children was introducing them to Jesus Christ and teaching them how to pray
for themselves so when the time of her departure was nigh, they would be just
fine! Lindsey and Joycelyn dedicated their lives to serving God, loving their
children, grandchildren, and family.
Joycelyn was a natural leader and an administrator par excellence. She joined
Southfield Missionary Baptist Church, Columbus, Oh under the leadership of Pastor
R.N. Simpson in 1968 and immediately went to work as a leader. She served as the
choir president for nearly 30 years and in 1985, she became a Deaconess. Her
membership remained at Southfield until relocating back to Mobile in 2000 where she
later became a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor
Norvell Glover. She continued to serve as a Deaconess and was a loyal member of the
Faith in Action Ministry. Joycelyn was employed by AT&T Corporation and retired
after 30 years of service. She also received The Five Degrees of the Order of the Eastern
Star Rose of Sharon Chapter No. 56 in Columbus, Ohio and was crowned Queen of the
South. Joycelyn volunteered at Children’s Hospitals and Adult Daycare Centers in every
city she lived in. She had a special love for kids and seniors.
She LIVED, she LED, she SERVED!
Joycelyn landed in the arms of her Heavenly Father on Monday, July 10,
2023 just as she lived, with class and dignity, at The Hospice of Medina
County Facility after a long battle with Dementia. Joycelyn’s memory has
now been restored and she is reunited with her parents, grandparents,
aunts, uncles, and others who welcomed her with open arms.
