

Mrs. Lula Reed Henderson was born July 19, 1929, to the union of Benjamin Reed and Augusta Reed Weaver. Both of her parents preceded her in death, as well as two sisters, Vera Snow, Mary Hicks, and on brother, Rodney Weaver. Lula was the oldest child of 10 siblings.
Lula confessed Christ and was Baptized at an early age at Reeds Chapel Baptist Church. After marrying Warren G. Henderson, (for almost fifty years), they relocated to Mobile, AL, where she joined Revelation Missionary Baptist Church. She served faithfully as a member of the Health Ministry, former president of the Willing Workers and served on the Finance Committee. She was asked to establish a church nursery under the Leadership of the late Rev. Leon Taylor and continue to serve as Director until 2020. She loved the children and they loved her.
She graduated from Snow Hill Institute in Snow Hill, AL. She continued her education by attending the first African American graduating class of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program in 1955. She was employed as an LPN at the old General Hospital. She was the first African American nurse hired at the Brookley Field Air Force Base. She changed careers and was hired as one of the first female Letter Carriers. She retired in 1979 and started another career as a Real Estate Agent. She lived her life to the fullest.
Lula leaves to cherish her sweet memories, two devoted daughters, Sherryll (John E.) White, and Donna J. Henderson. Lula also leaves to cherish their memories three brothers, Arrie Lee (Carol) Weaver, Melton (Tresa) Weaver, and Johnny Weaver; three sisters, Shirley (Charles) Weant, Annie Reed, Claudette (John) Shermon. She has two sister in-laws: Mary Alice Henderson Fowlkes and Ansola Henderson (Lewis) Garner. A host of nieces and nephews, two devoted, Iris Thompson and Milton Weaver. Four Goddaughters, Peggy Thrash, Rosalyn Castile, Renee Castile and Chinara Dosse. Lula leaves a host of other relatives and friends that will treasure her memories. The family would like to acknowledge the many acts of kindness and concern from Dr. Cecil (Rosemary) Parker, their children's Mobile grandmother.
A Home Going Celebration will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Revelation Missionary Baptist Church in Mobile, AL. Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery.
