Marc David Matre, PhD, age 81, of Mobile, Alabama passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio on May 1, 1937 the son of Howard H. and Ada L. (Schaub) Matre. A graduate of Hamilton High School (Class of 55, All-State Football). He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963. He attained his MA from Miami University (Ohio) in 1966 and his doctorate from Ohio State in 1969. Dr. Matre was an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of South Alabama for 41 years and a long-time member of several local and national academic organizations. He loved teaching and was well-regarded by students and colleagues alike. He was an accomplished high school athlete who remained active his entire life and began ballroom dancing in his sixties. His other hobbies included reading, gardening, and carpentry. A person of true character and integrity, those who loved him admired him for his sincerity, intelligence, patience, and kindness. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Anne (Campbell) Matre; his daughters Catherine (Mark) Salmon and Rachel (Michael Laden) Matre; grandchildren Kyle, Ford and Sarah; his sister Susan Gibbons; sister-in-law Elaine Matre; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Howard R. Matre. The family will receive friends at Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin Street, on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
