Margaret Landon Harvey – born January 9, 1920, in Marion, AR, died October 1, 2010, at a Mobile nursing facility. She was 90 years old and proud of it. She grew up in Anniston, AL and moved to Mobile after World War II. Mrs. Harvey was a homemaker and devoted to her family. She was an excellent cook, a bargain hunter, and an animal lover. She instilled a love of cooking in her two daughters. She was a skilled bridge player and made beautiful latch hook rugs that she shared with family and friends. She enjoyed living at Atria Regency where she was an Ambassador. Mrs. Harvey encouraged paper recycling at Atria and established the recycling of aluminum cans for the Mobile SPCA. She also helped care for the cats at Atria. A favorite family story is when Mama spent the night of Hurricane Frederic playing “Taps” on the harmonica. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bayard J. and Jenevieve Witt Landon; husband of over 49 years, Floyd Quitman Harvey; sisters, Mary Woodruff and Kathleen Landon; and son-in-law, Russell D. Hempstead. Mrs. Harvey is survived by her daughters, Karen Green (Arthur) and Judith Hempstead of Mobile; brother, Steve Landon (Rachel) of Hattiesburg, MS; nieces, nephews, and her good friends, Marjorie Northrop and Brenda Smith. The family would like to offer heartfelt thanks to Dr. Frank A. Hall for his compassionate care and patience, and to his office staff, especially Melissa Parker. Thanks to the staff of Allen Memorial Home for their excellent care during mother’s final days. Thanks to the Mobile SPCA Nursing Home Visitation Team (especially Lori Anbuhl and Jan Bailey) for bringing their pets to Atria and giving mother so much pleasure – it was her favorite day of the month. She always had treats ready for the volunteers and their pets. Inurnment will be held in Mobile Memorial Gardens on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mobile SPCA, 620 Zeigler Circle West, Mobile, AL 36608.
