Margaret Elizabeth Lowery was born on January 14, 1934 in Quitman, Texas to Reverend Charles L. and Novaline Vermillion. She came from a long line of Baptist ministers. Margaret went home to be with the Lord at age 87 on February 2, 2021 in Mobile, Alabama.
During her childhood, Margaret’s family moved to Fairbanks, Texas where she attended Cypress-Fairbanks schools. In 1954, Margaret married Derrol Lowery, and they enjoyed almost 67 years of marriage. Together, Derrol and Margaret raised four children: Cindy, Alicia, Kathy and Michael.
Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her great passion was cooking for her family, church family and friends. As a farmer’s wife, she faithfully brought hot dinners to the rice field during harvest and helped treat the farm crew to homemade ice cream at the end of each harvest season. Margaret also enjoyed music. For most of her life, she ministered in her church by playing the piano or organ and singing in the choir.
Margaret was a loyal friend. For 40 years, one of the highlights of her year was hosting a Christmas dinner party for some of their dearest friends. She was faithful to call to check on family members and friends old and new.
A cheerleader in high school, Margaret remained one the rest of her life. Besides her beloved Cy-Fair Bobcats, she was a loyal fan of the Baylor Bears, the Houston Astros, and the numerous teams her grandchildren played on. She loved playing games, and one is fondly referred to by her grandchildren as “the Mammaw game.” Three churches played a major role in Margaret’s life: Fairbanks Baptist and Champion Forest Baptist, both in Houston, and Christ Fellowship Baptist in Mobile. She was a faithful member of each in turn.
Margaret was preceded in death by: her parents; her brothers, Leland, James and Charles Ray; her sisters, Lois and Bernardine; her son, Michael; and her granddaughter, Melissa.
She is survived by: husband, Derrol; daughter, Cindy and husband, Chris De La Rosa; daughter, Alicia and husband, Tony Palmer; daughter, Kathy and husband, Chuck Finster; grandchildren George Derrol Ward (wife, Heather), Elizabeth Ward Evans (husband, Ryan), Nathan Palmer (wife, Tiana), Julie Palmer Draime (husband, Dustin), Jessica Palmer Kakish (husband, Danny), Scott Finster (wife, Chelsea), Mark Finster and Rebecca Finster; 19 great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Fellowship Baptist Church on Saturday, February 6 at 11:30am. Memorials may be made to Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, 445 Azalea Dr., Mobile, AL 36609. You are welcome to join for the live stream service for Mrs. Lowery available at https://cfmobile.org/
