Mary Grace moved to Montgomery, Alabama when she was 12 years old. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery and went on to attend one year at Florida State College for Women and then on to graduate from Huntingdon College in Montgomery. She went to Tulane Graduate School of Social Work in Louisiana.
Mary Grace worked for the Montgomery Welfare Department and later moved to Mobile and worked for the Alabama Crippled Children’s Service. It was during this time that she met and married Benjamin Rush Pearson II on February 20, 1954. They had a very short courtship and a long and happy marriage.
After having children, Mary Grace stayed home and tended to her family but was involved in many different committees and programs. She was a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, Needham Bryan Chapter for over 60 years, holding offices of Chapter Regent and others during her time there. She was a docent at the Richards-DAR House and Museum for over 30 years. Mary Grace worked in the gift shop for Christmas Open House up until 2019 when she was 94 years old. This was a special time that she and her daughter shared together every year.
She attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where she was involved with the Prayer and Care group and the church knitting group.
She had a great love of history and was a voracious reader. If you wanted to hear the truth spoken, she always spoke her mind and had a story to tell. She was an avid gardener and loved the outdoors.
She is survived by her two children, Mary Ellen Pearson and Benjamin Rush Pearson III (Heike), both of Mobile, nieces Cindy Wellener Hyman (Tom) and Kay Wellener, nephew Bill Wellener (Wendy) and many other nieces and nephews.
Mary Grace was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Benjamin Rush Pearson II, her parents George Edward Bobzin and Celestine Goodwyn Lucas Bobzin and her younger sister Ellen Bobzin Wellener (Jack) of Virginia.
