

Dr. Mary Louise Holt Hertz-Carter – A lifelong resident of Mobile, AL exchanged this life for eternal joy on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at the age of 92 in her home. She was the oldest of three children born to the union of Howard A. Holt, Sr. and Clara Miller Holt on March 11, 1919. Dr. Hertz-Carter attended public schools in Mobile, AL, and after two years of course work at the Mobile Branch of Alabama State College, she was awarded the Junior College Teaching Certificate from Alabama State College in Montgomery in 1939. Subsequently, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from Alabama State College with a major in elementary education. Additional degrees include a Master of Education degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia in reading education, an Education Specialist degree and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, each with an emphasis in reading. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard A. Holt, Sr. and Clara Miller Holt; first husband, Caleb R. Hertz, Sr.; second husband, Andrew Carter; and brothers, Richard A. Holt and Howard A. Holt, Jr. Dr. Hertz-Carter is survived by 4 children, Caleb R. Hertz, Jr. (Gloria) of Ft. Washington, MD, devoted son and daughter-in-law, Rudolph K. and Helen Hertz of Mobile, Carl A. Hertz (Veronica) of Mobile, and Richard A. Hertz (Pattie) of Amelia Court House, VA; 13 grandchildren, Camille Whitley, Caleb R. Hertz, III, Carlin Hertz (Jonata), Christopher Hertz, Kervin Hertz (Alois), Chaundra Hertz, Katrina Hertz, Neysa Henson (Michael), Vincent Hertz (Veronica), Nigel Hertz, Nicole Maldonado (Kenny), Rhonda Smith (Raymond), and Richard A. Hertz, Jr.; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 great, great-grandchildren; devoted niece, Keryl Stanley of Milford, OH; devoted nephew, James A. Holt of Detroit, MI; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family would like to offer its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Odyssey Healthcare, especially Elsie and her team, for the professional care provided to Dr. Hertz-Carter. Funeral services will be held from Green Grove Baptist Church on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at 11 a.m. Visitation will begin at the church at 9 a.m. prior to the service. Friends will be received at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Friday, June 10, from 2-6 p.m. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
