Mary Elizabeth Smyth Scarcliff was 64, born May 21,1954 in Morocco, Africa on Nouasseur Air Force Base, to Mother Janice Potts Smyth and William Louis Smyth. Mary passed away due to terminal glioblastoma brain cancer at her home on Dauphin Island, AL, surrounded by her family at bedside at 12:08am on July 25, 2018. A loving wife and mother, she was a long time resident of Dauphin Island, Alabama. She was also a resident of Morocco, Africa, France, Germany, Annandale, Virginia and Theodore, AL.
Mrs. Mary was best known and loved for the establishment of the Lighthouse Bakery LLP in 1997 on Dauphin Island, AL, along with her loving and generously giving heart. A very talented lady of all trades, Mary graduated high school from Bishop O’Connell in Annandale, VA and graduated from Northern Virginia Community College with an AAS Degree in Physical Therapy. She never let that degree go to waste as a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. Mary worked at Providence Hospital in the P.T. Department, worked with Little Sisters of The Poor, Villa Mercy and Home Health. She was also a Clinical Instructor and Coordinator at Bishop State Community College. Mary was a past President of the State of Alabama Licensed Physical Therapy Association. Mrs. Scarcliff became an EMT Basic and volunteer firefighter, which led her to becoming the Secretary of the Mobile County Volunteer Firefighter Association and the Rescue Coordinator for the Dauphin Island Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad. It was then that she designed the dolphin emblem and patch that is seen to this day on the Dauphin Island Fire and Rescue Trucks and uniforms.
Always involved with the community and fellow business owners, Mary served as a past President of the Dauphin Island Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Mary had a big heart and could be found quietly helping those in need. She never met a stranger. She loved her family, her friends and her community. She will be missed beyond measure.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years Daniel Harrell Scarcliff, son Captain Sean Emile Scarcliff and daughter-in-law Samantha K. M. Scarcliff, daughter Erica Elizabeth Scarcliff Pridgen and son-in-law Joshua A Pridgen, daughter; Christa Kathryn Jones and son-in-law Ricky L. Jones Jr, grandson Jonathon Harrell Scarcliff, grandson John Anthony Pridgen, grandson Jesse Elliott Pridgen, grandson Ian Emile Pridgen, grandson Stanley David Roberson Jr. and granddaughter Isabella Mary Roberson. Her sister Stephanie Elaine Smyth, brother John William Smyth, sister Kathryn Ann Smyth Litten, brother Edward Louis Smyth, sister; Theresa Janice Smyth, brother; Gregory Shannon Smyth along with many extended family members and a host of wonderful friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents William and Janice Smyth, father-in-laws; Emile Harrell Scarcliff and Earnest C. Elliot, mother-in-law; Hattie Johnson (Bell) Scarcliff and grandson; James Richard Scarcliff.
A wake for Mary will be held at St. Edmond by the Sea Catholic Church on Dauphin Island, AL, Monday, July 30, 2018 from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Funeral services will begin at 3:00 PM with Rev. Msgr. Leonardo Guadalquiver officiating under the direction of Pine Crest Funeral Home. Interment will immediately take place on the grounds of Catholic Cemetery on Bienville Blvd., Dauphin Island, AL.
