Rebecca Capers James Baumhauer (Becky) born December 13, 1925, died peacefully, in her 100th year, on June 23, 2025. Becky, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, was a resident of Mobile for 75 years. She was the daughter of Mattie May Neville James and William Hardin James. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Frances Moore James Donohue and Virginia Aiken James, and brother, William Neville James. She is survived by her three children, who loved her dearly, John Daly Baumhauer III (Debra) of Camden, Alabama, Virginia Aiken Baumhauer Nixon (Clancy) of Ashburn, Virginia, and Jessie Augusta Baumhauer Hill (Moe) of Nashville, Tennessee. She is also survived by eight adoring grandchildren, who knew her as “Bebe”: Robin Cadwalader Herndon IV, Veronica Adele Herndon McDonald (Michael), John Daly Baumhauer IV (Joyce), William Neville Nixon, Samuel Elijah Nixon, Rebecca Capers Halper, Elmore Hill III (Bobbe), and Noni Carpenter Fisher (John), and ten great-grandchildren, Peter, Mac, Mary Bell, Jack, Kimble, Mary English, Chavah, Ellis, Penny, and Harry. Additionally, she is survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends whom she greatly cherished.
Becky was a graduate of North Avenue Presbyterian School (now Westminster School) in Atlanta, Georgia and received her degree in English from Randolph Macon Women’s College of Lynchburg, Virginia. She moved to Mobile in 1950 to marry John Daly Baumhauer Jr. When her children were grown, she became a licensed social worker and was employed by the Family Counseling Center of Mobile and later by Wilmer Hall Children’s Home.
Becky was a cradle Presbyterian and an active member and elder of Government Street Presbyterian Church. From early childhood she loved spending time each summer with her grandmother and extended family in the mountains of Montreat, North Carolina. Later she relished hosting her own children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews in Montreat annually – building lifetime memories and close family ties.
Becky spent her life loving and serving those around her. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her wonderful sense of humor, her love of chocolate, and her devotion to family and friends. She expressed her faith as she regularly proclaimed, “Everything is made for love!”
The family gives special thanks to Gertrude Timmons, Irene Hargett, Deborah Sawyer, and the staff at Westminster Village for their loving care of our mother.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Government Street Presbyterian Church on Monday, July 7, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Government Street Presbyterian Church, 300 Government Street, Mobile, AL, 36602.
