

Rebecca Heacock James, Longtime resident of Mobile, AL and wife of Dr. Alton B. James passed away on June 18, 2021 after a lengthy battle against Pulmonary Fibrosis. Becky was born in Talladega, AL July 23, 1946, where she grew up with her four siblings and attended school. In Talladega High School, Becky played clarinet in the marching band, was a majorette and in multiple honoraires. Becky attended Agnes Scott College and graduated from Auburn University with a Masters degree in Biology. While in college, Becky was selected as Talladega County Maid of Cotton. She met her husband, Alton Britt James at Auburn.
Following graduation, Becky and Alton moved to Birmingham where Becky taught Biology at Cherokee Bend School while her husband was in medical school. The couple then moved to Mobile, AL where they raised two children, Rebecca Duckworth Kelly (Liam) of London, England and William Thomas James, (Meghan) of Kanab, Utah. Throughout her years, Becky was very active in the Mobile community as a member of the Junior League of Mobile, her bridge club, book club, Mardi Gras mystic societies and Ashland Place United Methodist Church. Becky was blessed with a long and wonderful life highlighted by numerous trips she and Alton took.
In addition to her husband and her 2 children, Becky is survived by her grandson, Henry Kent James, and 2 step granddaughters, Scarlett and Daisy Kelly. Becky is also survived by her twin brother Jim (Harriet) Heacock of Mountain Brook, AL, sister Carol Sullivan (Carroll) of Point Clear, AL, brother Gary (Kathy) Heacock of Talladega and Marsh Harbor, Bahamas and Heidi (Sam) Yates of Mountain Brook, AL, brother in law, Tommy James (Elaine) of Montgomery, AL and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Becky was predeceased by her parents Jimmy and Becky Peacock.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Ashland Place United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends consider a gift in Becky’s memory be made to Ashland Place United Methodist Church, or to a charity of your choosing.
