Redin George Pittman, 71, passed away at his home of 31 years, surrounded by his loving family, on April 16, 2020. Redin was born on August 17, 1948, in Dillion, South Carolina. He grew up in Rowland, North Carolina, and has been a resident of Mobile, Alabama for the past 40 years.
Redin was an extremely talented musician, singer, and songwriter. In North Carolina he played with several bands, including The Grey Society, The Young Ones, The Bearings, Catfish, and Gold Rush, to name a few. He treasured the friendships made while playing with these bands, that have lasted over 55 years. After moving to Mobile, Redin played a solo act, mostly at Paddy O’Tooles, and in a duet with Phillip Williams. Redin was at his best singing with an acoustic guitar. After years out of the music business, Redin started playing open mic nights at Fins and Waves on Dauphin Island. Two years ago, Redin became a member of Cedar Street Social Club, where he joined many talented local musicians, which he loved dearly. Redin was awesome at mentoring younger musicians, but also loved learning new licks from them. Redin has been a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association for almost 30 years and served as the group’s local coordinator for several years.
Redin loved his family dearly and volunteered in many ways to be a part of his children’s lives. Redin was Mr. Mom, Room Dad at school, PTO President, and assistant baseball coach, spent endless hours at swim and dive meets, and even took horseback riding lessons. Redin never met a stranger; once you knew him, you became his friend.
Redin was preceded in death by his parents, Redin Gresham Pittman and Willie Elma McKay Brewer; “mother” aunts, Islay Catherine Pittman and Margaret Louis Pittman; and brothers, Joel P. Easterling and James W. Easterling. Redin is survived by his wife of 36 years, Pamela Arata Pittman; daughters, Jennifer (Paul) Mathews of Franklin, Tennessee, Meghan Long of Springhill, Tennessee, and Whitney Pittman; son, Redin Joseph (Danni) Pittman of Fort Myers, Florida; grandchildren, Logan, Ava, Madeline, Waylon, and Paisley; sister, Sudie E. (Tommy) Gower of Clayton, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Carol Arata (Philip) Kreis; many nephews, a niece, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
The family would like to thank the 3rd and 4th floor nursing staff at Springhill Medical Center during our 35-day stay, Dr. Robert Weinacker and his staff at Radiology Oncology, and Encompass nurses Wanda, Erica, Cathy D., and Cathy S., who we appreciated so much for her special care at the end of life! A huge thank you to Pastor Todd McGhee, who walked this three-month journey with us.
Due to the pandemic there will not be a service at this time. A celebration memorial service will be held at a later date, when we can all gather again.
