He was the only child of Richard Murray Jr. and Grace Dunlap Murray also of Mobile. He is preceded in death by his parents and his eldest child, Vaughan Murray Williams. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Wallace Harton Murray, and children Laura Murray Hannon (William “Dubby”) of Mobile, Richard Murray IV (Norita) of Birmingham, Jay Harton Murray (Lisa) of Mobile, and Grace Murray Wann (William “Chip”) of Birmingham, along with 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and one beloved dog, Maisie Murray Hannon.
Richard graduated from University Military School in 1953 where he was selected as Battalion Leader and from Vanderbilt University in 1957 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
After serving in the Navy, he returned to Mobile and worked in the shipping and banking industries for almost 50 years, starting his career at The First National Bank of Mobile and ultimately retiring from Cooper T. Smith Corporation.
He was involved in his community, including leadership roles with the Senior Bowl, America’s Junior Miss, Lions Club and UMS-Wright where he was a long-time supporter and board member. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church where he and Mary Wallace were initially drawn to the ministry of Dr. Jerry Gunnells. He loved Mobile, particularly enjoying the hunting and fishing nearby. He mostly enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends, both old and new. Although he loved to travel, he was never away for too long and passed away in his home of 60 years.
