He is survived by his wife of 50 years Suzanne, his son Thomas, sisters Marianne Tatum (Monterey) and Michele Scearce. (Fairhope, Al). He was a beloved husband, father and brother. Bob was the son of the late Col. George Taylor Grimes(Citronelle, Ala.) and Charlotte Grimes (Dijon, France)
Bob was very proud of his heritage. His mother immigrated from France in early 30’s and his father (American born) was a purple heart veteran of ww11. He graduated from Davidson High (Mobile,Ala) and the University of South Alabama with a degree in Art History, served in the Army at Camp Darby, Italy. Bob was a proud Member of American Legion Post 41, Monterey. He served as commander at Post 41 and unofficial liaison to the military stationed at the Presidio. With the students he worked to organize and catalogue much of the donations left to the post. It was important to keep the history of our soldiers alive. Bob was proud of his country and the military that served to keep us free.
He also was very creative and had a true artist spirit. He loved books, reading history of any type was his forte. His ability to retain that knowledge was remarkable and he was never at a loss for words to support his opinions. He was always curious and asking why. So thus began his research.
He also served several years as president of Old Town neighborhood and wanted to preserve the history and architecture of Monterey.
Bob could paint a picture, build a boat, and repair almost anything , he loved to create. His happiest times were taking his wooden boat into the Bay in Alabama or Monterey Bay and catching a rock cod, salmon, redfish, mullet, Flounder, even an old catfish or nothing. It didn’t matter, he was on the water and he was fishing!
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 15, 2022 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, Alabama, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
“There are different stages of heartbreak:
The kind when you are young. I will not explain nor should I need to.
When you are middle aged and you think you are done but life has more in store for you.
Then when you are old beyond reason inconsequential and you lean on philosophy. Cold and unfulfilling to explain why that body you once held can never be restored to you.”
Bob Grimes—rest in peace you were consequential!
