"The greatest granddad a grandson could ever have wished for!" – the proud words of an eight year old grandson of Roy Kenneth Smith. On April 15, 2014, Roy crossed the finish line into eternity to start his new life in the tangible Presence of the Lord. His wife of 24 years, Dorothy Hughes-Smith, is joined in celebration of his life with four children, Caresse (Chad) Fincher, Celanie (Patrick) Coleman, Bart (Davina) Hughes, and Ben (Kimberly) Hughes. Together, a legacy of eleven grandchildren have been impacted by this wonderful man: Anna Catherine Fincher, Jackson Fincher, Carlee Coleman, Brittany Coleman, Emily Coleman, Joel Hughes, Jacob Hughes, Josiah Kenneth Hughes, Judah Hughes, Ethan Hughes and Emma Hughes. A legacy of a life dedicated to sacrificial giving defines the very persona of who Roy Kenneth Smith was. A man full of strength in stature, in spirit, and in love, Roy could state along with the Apostle Paul that: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" – II Timothy 4:7 As a long-time member of the Tanner Williams community and employee at Ingalls Shipbuilding, Roy has had an impact on countless people that can speak to the caring compassion of this man. He loved the Lord with all of his heart and he loved others as himself. Roy is survived by his siblings Linda (Harold) Harmon, Tommy (Diane) Smith, Irene (Gary) Coleman, and Sissy Smith. He is preceded in death by his father, Lee Vernon Smith, mother Mary Ruth Smith, and his brother, Paul Smith, with whom he passed away. The family requests that you join in celebration of Roy Saturday, April 19th at Life Church 8701 Zeigler Blvd. Mobile, Al 36608. Visitation will be from 11am-1pm and will be followed by a service and burial. The gravesite will be located at Joiner Cemetery in Tanner Williams. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to: Globe International – Bill & Julie Hughes (missionaries in the family) PO Box 3040 Pensacola, FL 32516 and Tanner Williams Assembly of God Building Fund 14440 Tanner Williams Rd. For the righteous man is taken away from calamity, he enters into peace; they rest in their beds who walk in their uprightness. – Isaiah 57:1-2.
