He was a professional musician and in that capacity had toured the Southeast from his teenage years until moving to Mobile in 1954. He was employed for many years at Smith Kelly Supply Company, advancing over the years to the position of vice-president. When that company was sold he was employed as Sales-Floor Manager for Riley-Stuart Supply Co. and worked there until retirement after having completed forty years in the building supply business. During these years Sam remained active on the Mobile musical scene, having served at one point as president of Musician Local 407-613. He was bassist with the Bill Lagman and Roy Choice Orchestra, The Stardusters, and Abba Combo. His professional musical career concluded after more than thirty years with the Bob Schultz Orchestra, but, as long as his health permitted, he continued to perform with the Sentimentals at several volunteer groups at local assisted living homes and for other charitable and social events. Sam was past-president of the Mobile Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was a Mason and Life Member of Mobile Lodge 40, a Shriner and past-president of Abba Combo Unit. As a member of Abba Temple’s Drivers Unit, a significant portion of Sam’s time during his retirement years was spent transporting burned or crippled children to the Shriners Hospitals in Shreveport and Galveston.
