Thomas “Tommy” Alfred Cowart passed away peacefully on Friday, April 5, 2019, at the age of 93. A native of Mobile, AL, Tommy graduated from McGill Institute. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was the recipient of a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was employed for International Paper Company for 37 years retiring July 1, 1985. Tommy loved Alabama football, played softball until age 61, loved working in his yard, traveling and fishing. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus Council #666, a member of two Mardi Gras Societies, a member of the Azalea Ballroom Dance Club, and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Louisa Padilla Cowart; brothers Fred Robert and Cornelius Cowart; and sisters Marguerite Rodgers, Elizabeth Hall and Mable Shewmake. He will forever be remembered by his wife of 65 years Dorothy Cowart; his children Kathy Zoghby (Tommy) of Mobile, AL; Diane Wells (Gary) of Panama City, FL; Maria Blair (Harrell) of Mobile, AL; and Leiane Cowart of Panama City, FL; his brother Hugh Cowart and sister Delores Knapp both of Mobile, AL; and sister Louise Mooney of Portland, OR; Grandchildren Dr. Jonathan Zoghby (Libby) of Oxford, MS; Danny Makowsky (Viviana) of Orange Park, FL; Katherine Granade (Joe) of New Orleans, LA; Lauren Blair of Birmingham, AL; James Makowsky of Gainesville, FL; Ryan Zoghby of Mobile, AL; Matthew Blair of Mobile, AL, and Rachel Wells of Panama City, FL; and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held April 9, 2019, at St. Dominics Catholic Church at 11:00 A.M., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Home.
