Dr. Walker Byron Stewart passed away at Providence Hospital at the age of 85 on Thursday, May 21, 2015 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marylyn Louise Faulk Stewart, his parents, Judge Winston Stewart and Louise McCain Stewart, his sister, Janet Stewart Ballard, and an infant grandson, Winston Brackin Stewart, Jr. He is survived by four children and their families, including Sydney Stewart Whiting (William), Walker Byron "Corky" Stewart Jr. (Brigitte), Winston Brackin Stewart, Leslie Stewart Gafford (John); ten grandchildren: Walker Byron Stewart, III, William Stewart Whiting (Alexandra), John Bradley Stevens (Anne), Danielle Eve Stewart, Ashley Windham Stewart, Joseph McCain Whiting (Christina), Margaret Meade Whiting, Marylyn Louise Gafford, Michael Winston Gafford and Matthew Douglas Gafford; two great granddaughters, Elizabeth Grace Stevens and Abigail Louise Whiting; special nephew and niece, Glen Faulk and Amy Linton Faulk, and a host of dear friends and extended family members.
Dr. Stewart, who was born on July 14, 1929 in Sylacauga, Alabama and raised in Rockford, Alabama, was a well-loved Family Physician in the Mobile area for over 40 years. After having graduated from the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham and serving in the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Virginia, he and Marylyn made Mobile their home in the late 1950's. He amassed a tremendous patient base which he cared for deeply through the years in his office on Burma Road, in the local hospitals, and even at the patients' homes when needed. He was a truly "old fashioned" doctor who will be both missed and remembered by many. Medicine was his calling, but he greatly enjoyed working in his yard, celebrating family events, and travelling the world with his soulmate, Marylyn. It is bittersweet that we celebrate the reunion of Walker and Marylyn after 17 months, but theirs was a love that endured through good times and bad, life and most assuredly death. Friends and former patients have already begun to remember his kindness, integrity, and diligence in the medical field, and we, his family, will be forever grateful for each and every story, account, and memory shared.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 26, 2015, from 1:30 to 3:00pm, in McGowan Hall at Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, with a Memorial Service immediately following in the Chapel. Family graveside services will be celebrated at 12:00 on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Sears Chapel United Methodist Church in Rockford, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Victory Health Partners or the American Heart Association. Arrangements under the direction of Radney Funeral Home-Mobile, Mobile, AL.
