

William H. Southall – A native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died Saturday, September 17, 2011, in a local hospital. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and was a 1943 graduate of Murphy High School where he was an outstanding football and basketball player. He attended the University of Kentucky where he played football for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Mr. Southall was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary McCowan Southall and John Robert Southall; two sisters, Marie Antoinette Southall, Dorothea Southall Beaty; two brothers, John Robert Southall, Jr. and Franklin E. Southall. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Bessie Dueitt Southall; two daughters, Marion Wallace, Margaret Templeton; one brother, Thomas A. Southall; four grandchildren, David Wallace, Natalie Nettles, Mark Nettles, Christina (Don) Cox; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held from St. John’s Episcopal Church on Monday, September 19, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 1707 Government St., Mobile, AL 36604.
