Anthony earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from St. John’s and Columbia Universities in New York City. He received his certification as a "teacher of common branch subjects in grade 1-6" in 1968, and worked as a high school special education teacher for the Glen Cove City school district for over 25 years. Anthony was a very dedicated special education teacher who loved to make his students laugh. He incorporated humor whenever possible. He also tutored students at home. He had a great rapport with his students, many of whom called him “Mr. Pal.” Anthony always used to say that he and his students were like the show “Welcome Back, Kotter.”
Shortly after retiring from teaching, Anthony moved to Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania where he earned his realtor’s license. After obtaining his license, he worked for Bonanno Custom Homes, ERA One Source Realty and Prince of Peace Homes, all of Pennsylvania. Later in his life, he moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Some of Anthony’s many interests included ballroom dancing at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, playing the keyboard and piano and singing baritone in the church choir. He was a member of the Rotary Club and Knights of Columbus and was active in his church parishes, St. Raymond’s Church of New York and St. Catherine Church of Pennsylvania.
Anthony also enjoyed walks by Big Bass Lake in Pennsylvania, spending time sunbathing, weekend drives to Connecticut and New York to visit his favorite cousins, and visiting one of his favorite places, the “Lady of Lourdes” in Litchfield, Connecticut. He also loved to vacation at Eagle Lake, in Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania. Anthony was very generous in giving to numerous charities including support of veterans, funds for children and feeding the hungry.
Anthony was a very spiritual and selfless man who always put others before his own needs. He was easy to talk to and always smiling. Anthony had a larger than life personality and a special place in many, many hearts.
Anthony will be sorely missed at our annual Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. He always sat at the head of the table ready to say a beautiful blessing. Anthony cherished the time spent with his closest friends and loved ones. One of Anthony’s favorite prayers was the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
