A long time resident of Trumbull, she moved to Monroe 5 years ago. Born in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of Felicita and Joseph Salvato, she graduated from Adelphi University with a double major in Psychology and History/Government. A wife and mother for many years, she returned to the work force at the age of 50. As Director of Volunteers for North Fairfield Geriatric Center, she developed programs for residents of their Memory Care Unit. She taught art/painting classes to their residents with dementia. She believed art gave a voice and an outlet to those who had lost their ability to communicate with the world.
A love of color and design led her to pursue art classes at The New School in Manhattan. Fall in New England, with its ever changing color palette, inspired many beautiful drawings and paintings.
Family was Jo’s greatest joy. Days spent with her daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren were days well spent. An excellent cook, many Sunday afternoons were spent enjoying leisurely meals around her dining room table.
Jo is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Sam Leone. Together they explored, traveled and made even every day errands an adventure. She also leaves behind her loving daughters; Renee (John) Ostaszewski of Monroe CT, and Elaine (Paul) Dunseath of Cape Coral, FL, her grandchildren; Lauren (George) Philbrick of California, MD, Stephen (Rebecca) Ostaszewski of La Mirada, CA, and Aaron Dunseath of Cape Coral, FL and her great granddaughter; Charlotte Philbrick of California, MD.
We would like to thank her caregivers, Ula & Mark; her physician, Dr Michael Cafaro and her care team from Regional Hospice, Mary, Jenn, Michelle and John. Without their efforts and support, Jo’s wish to pass away in her home would never have been possible.
Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Friday, November 26, 2021 from 2-4 pm at Spadaccino & Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT 06468.
