AVIS DE DÉCÈS

Lucy Casola

26 février 19278 janvier 2021

On Friday, January 8, 2021, Lucy Mary Casola (nee Russo) passed on to her eternal reward at the age of 93.

Lucy was born in the Bronx, New York in 1927, the daughter of Italian immigrants, and grew up during the Great Depression. Following World War II she was employed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company at their offices on the upper floors of The Empire State Building in Manhattan.

On July 18, 1948, she married Anthony Casola. The couple resided in the Richmond Hill section of Queens, NY until Tony’s employment brought them to Bridgeport, CT. In 1957 they bought a home in Monroe, CT where they resided for over 50 years. Together Lucy and Tony raised 4 children. Lucy’s married years were spent as a devoted mother and homemaker. She loved sharing time with her children, reading books and poetry and singing songs; the sillier the better. Her home was always filled with the tempting aromas of home cooked meals and fresh baked goods. She could often be heard singing along with hymns or showtunes or classics from the American songbook while she cooked and kept house. Nothing made her happier than the family gathered around the table for a hearty meal, whether a holiday feast or a weeknight supper, followed by conversation over coffee and dessert.

After 72 years of marriage, Lucy’s beloved husband, Tony, passed away in October of 2020. They will now be reunited at the right hand of God. Lucy is survived by her children Virginia Glassman and husband Aaron of Trumbull CT, Patricia Chase and husband Thomas of Monroe CT, Thomas Casola and wife Sue Smithers of Pipersville PA, and Theresa Caruso and husband Michael of Monroe CT. Lucy was also the proud grandmother of Anthony, Julie, Marissa and Alisha; and great-grandmother to Kaitlyn, Alexandra, Christopher, Evelyn, and Liliana.

To those who did not know her well, Lucy’s gentle spirit and loving ways could belie her strength and determination. Those that did know her understand how her faith in God and commitment to family sustained her. They also know she was never more than arm’s length from a good piece of chocolate when she needed a little extra boost.

A viewing will be held from 8:30 until 9:30 on Tuesday, January 12, at Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe, CT. A memorial mass will follow at 10:00 at Saint Stephen’s Church, 6948 Main St, Trumbull, CT. Attendees are requested to break with funeral tradition and wear an article of brightly colored clothing in memory of Lucy’s love for sunny, cheerful colors.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Monroe Public Library in memory of Lucy and directed to Books and Material for Children.
