Marietta Ruel

Marietta Ruel, 77, of Monroe, CT died peacefully with her family by her side on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Stamford Hospital, CT She was born July 23, 1935 in Ljubljana, Slovenia , the daughter of Frank and Ana Schwickert.

Marietta graduated from the University of Connecticut with highest honors and distinction and was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to attend Brown University where she received a Masters Degree in French literature. She attended Bassick High School in Bridgeport, CT

Marietta had a true passion for teaching and developed many lifelong friendships with her teaching peers and with her students who she dearly enjoyed teaching. She taught German and French for many years at Masuk High School. After retiring, she continued to teach German at Norwalk Community College. Marietta cherished her family, her children and grandchildren, her nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed time spent with her friends appreciating classical music, opera and the arts. She was a member of Holy Cross Church in Fairfield, CT

Marietta is survived by her children Alicia Laing of Stamford, CT, Gregory Ruel of Ringoes, NJ and Christopher Ruel of Lovettsville, VA; her beloved grandchildren, Jonathan Laing, Christian Laing, Emma Ruel and Nolan Ruel; her siblings and and their spouses, Stella Klanchich, Peter and Diena Schwickert, Ana and Reno Raffaeli, Lucia and Steve Thomashefski. “Tante Eca” also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who she adored.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joseph “Al” Ruel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association or the American Cancer Society.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 10:30AM at Holy Cross Church, 750 Tahmore Drive, Fairfield CT. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Newtown, CT. Visiting hours will be held Monday, April 1, 2013 from 4:00PM- 8:00PM at Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher & Son Community Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe CT.
