

Sister Redempta Kowalska, CSFN, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2014 after a brief illness. The former Apolonia Kowalska, Sister Redempta was born in Brooklyn, NY the fifth of six children born to Francis and Maria (Bartold) Kowalski; two of whom died in infancy. Sister attended St. Stanislaus Kostka Elementary School in Brooklyn before entering Nazareth Academy High School in Philadelphia, PA. After graduating from high school, Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth on June 15, 1936. Sister Redempta was an elementary grade school teacher for 56 years of her religious life. The first years in the classroom were spent in schools in the state of Pennsylvania; St. John Cantius, Philadelphia and Holy Trinity, McAdoo. Sister was then transferred to New York where she taught at St. John Cantius, Brooklyn; SS. Cyril and Methodius, Brooklyn; Our Lady of Czestochowa, Brooklyn and St. Adalbert, Elmhurst. Sister also taught in St. Stephen School, Paterson, NJ; St. Michael School, Derby, CT and St. Joseph School in Norwich, CT. Sister retired from the classroom in 1995 but chose to serve as school librarian at St. Adalbert School, Elmhurst, NY until 2003. Sister moved to Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent, Monroe, CT in 2006. Sister was predeceased by her brothers Reverend John Kowalski, CM and Reverend Edmund Kowalski, CM and her sister, Sister Celine Kowalska, CSFN.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 28th, 2013 at 10:30am at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent, Monroe, CT. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Monroe, CT.
