“Then spake Jesus again onto them, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
A lifelong resident of Elmont, NY, Ted was born at Queens General Hospital on January 19, 1941 to the late, Nelson Ellsworth and Jennie (Kilpert) Probst. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Eunice (Parra); his brother, Nelson (Joan) and sister, Margaret. He is survived by his brother and sister, George and Joan. Ted was the father of five - Theodore (Gina), Mary Ann (Craig), Eric (Melissa), Bryan (Kristin) and Jonathan (Janice). He was the grandfather of Michael (Evelyn), Nicholas (Darya), Joseph (Nezzy), Joshua, Zachary, Alexandra, Eric and great grandfather of Abigail and Ethan. His many family members and friends will miss him dearly.
As a child, he enjoyed his time in the Boy Scouts, where he was a First and Second Class Scout, Junior Leader Trainer and Explorer. Ted graduated from Thomas A. Edison Vocational High School in Jamaica, NY, in June 1958, with a diploma in Printing and Presswork.
His love of Country brought him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps in July 1958, at the age of 17, where he attained the rank of Corporal. He attended the Aviation Fundamentals School and Aviation Machinist's Mate (AD) Program. He was proud to have been involved in the United States Space Program, NASA’s Project Mercury. During his service, Ted received two Good Conduct Medals and an Honorable Discharge in July 1964.
Following his service in the Marine Corps, Ted continued his public service with The City of New York. He was a patrolman with the New York City Transit Police Department from April 1965 until his retirement in January 1980. He was awarded for commendable conduct, selfless dedication, courage and determination. He never tired of sharing his stories of both his time in the Marine Corps and as a police officer. His stories would usually begin, “When I was a Marine or when I was on the job…” Everyone knew to sit down because it was going to take a while.
Over the years, he was a proud, distinguished and decorated member of The American Legion and The American Legion Color Guard, The Marine Corp League, The USMC Reserve Toys for Tots programs and the NYC Retired Transit Police Officers’ Association. He also spent his time visiting veterans at St. Albans VA Hospital, where he collected and distributed care packages. He was instrumental in programs to collect donations for our military troops overseas and received commendations for his efforts.
Ted was a man of faith and a devoted Christian. He was a member of Cops for Christ. Along with his wife Eunice, he always made time for those less fortunate, finding ways to bring food and clothing to anyone in need. He would drive around searching for those who feared shelters to bring them hot coffee, food, clothing and blankets. Many people were aware of his tireless mission. A local baker would hang bags of freshly baked goods on his door daily and others would leave clothing and blankets. He dedicated his time to community service, local politics, the Elmont school district and other causes close to his heart.
He dearly missed his mom, dad, family and friends that predeceased him but most of all, he missed his loving and beautiful wife, Eunice. The Lord called him home on January 9, her birthday, reuniting them in eternal peace and rest.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ted’s honor to the following non-profit organization that carries forward the same focus on service that he viewed as so important.
