

Former New York resident Verna M. Daly, 77, died February 23, 2013, at her home in Monroe, Connecticut. She was born on Halloween in 1935 on Governors Island New York to Mary Keegan Kennedy McGivern and Wilbur Kennedy. An only child, Verna's earlier years were spent in Buzzards Bay on Cape Cod and later in Quincy Massachusetts. After her parents separation, she moved back to the Bronx and attended PS 105 where she met her longtime friend Dorothy. Later she met and fell in love with Lawrence (Larry) Joseph Daly. Married June 5, 1955 at the Immaculate Conception Parish on Gun Hill Road in New York. She is survived by her four children, Lawrence Casey Daly, deceased; Robert Michael Daly of Oyster Bay NY; her daughter and son-in-law, Verna and Bill Daly of Norfolk MA; her daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Nicholas Shope of Monroe CT; six grandchildren: Jennifer Daly Shaun Daly, Emma and Matthew Daly, Christopher and Keegan Shope. Verna's favorite thing bedsides spending time with her grandchildren was spending time in the water. Verna grew up swimming in Buzzards Bay on Cape Cod and eventually she became a lifeguard at the Bronx Pool Club in Throngs Neck. She spent many days with friends swimming at Orchard Beach. Verna and Larry were both swimming coached for the Levittown Swimming Association, where they moved to after the birth of Casey and Bobby. In Levittown, Verna was a full-time mother while Larry worked at Fernando's Meat Market. After Larry's death, Verna moved the family to Bayville New York. She worked at State Farm Insurance until she took a job at LaCascia and Sons' Insurance agency in Mineola New York. Joe and Barbara LaCascia encouraged Verna to pursue her license to further her career in insurance. Verna then worked for Dick and Ann Arkin for the RIA Insurance Group where she worked until she retired at 65. After retirement, Verna moved to Maybrook New York where she made a new family of friends. She later moved to Monroe Connecticut with her daughter, Kathleen and son-in-law, Nick where she became an active member of St. Jude's Church and the Monroe Senior Center. No matter where Verna lived, she made friends for life and touched everyone she met. She is truly a one-of-kind person that will be very missed. Heaven has a new angel.
