Mr. Rice truly was an awesome teacher.  He connected with kids in a way that not many can successfully accomplish.  We will definitely miss you Mr. Rice and God bless your family during this time.

Mel was such an amazing person!  Definitely one of a kind and one of my favorite teachers in high school.  Loved listening to him announce the games and hearing his enthusiasm and love of the Norton Bluejays!  I graduated his final year of teaching, and feel blessed to have spent his last year of teaching with him.   The class of 1990 honored him with holding up signs that said, "Thanks Mel!" as the class was presented. When thinking about Mel Rice there is no way to even begin without acknowledging my deep respect for his many positive qualities, both professionally and personally.  Personally, he lived what he taught.  He had high standards, high expectations, and high values.  He put all these characteristics into practice within his family, church,and community.  Professionally, he had techniques, methods, and strategies that N.C.H.S. students were so very lucky to benefit from.  As peers of his, both Peggy and I agree that he elevated the sense of pride, the overall level of accomplishment, and raised the standard of achievement for each student he encountered.  But, all of this did not remain in his classroom.  It overflowed into the hallways and into the other classrooms, plus extra-curricular activities.  Teachers were amazed and motivated by his dignity and persistence at stimulating students, developing curriculum, and influencing our educational process.  What a hero he was to us all.  He was a teacher of teachers.  We were all made better by having been in his shadow.  Blessings to his girls, know that you are in our prayers.  Lary & Peggy Stull

"The Voice of the Blue Jays" will be dearly missed.  I always enjoyed when he announced "trrrrrraveling", especially when it was on the opponent.  I never knew his middle name was Pleasant, but now that I know it makes sense.  He was always pleasant to be around in school, church, community.  God bless his family.

I really enjoyed Mr. Rice as an accounting teacher.  While we were working on our assignments, he would let us listen to KQ106, the coolest rock station out of Kearney.

Mr. Rice was a great teacher, and touched many lives. Not just the kids he taught, but anyone he crossed paths with.

Mr. Rice was one of a kind. I loved having him for three or four classes in high school, especially during fourth hour, which was broken up by lunch, and he would take parts of numerous names to come up with something to yell out instead of "Accounting!" Every day it was "GordyRySmith!" He was fabulous teacher, and I learned a lot from him. What a great man.

Mel was an awesome teacher. And a great sports announcer. Just a truly great guy. God bless his family
