

Melvin was born 1/17/1928 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Melvin & Ruth Rice.
He grew up in Butler, MO, graduating from Butler High School.
He served in the US Navy, he attended the University of Kansas, where he met Joan Wilson. They married on 7/27/1950
Melvin graduated from the University of Kansas in 1950 with a degree in Business and in 1960 with a degree in Education.
Melvin was a lifelong Jayhawk Fan.
Mel and Jo had 2 daughters and moved to Norton, Kansas in 1960 where Mr. Rice taught at Norton Community High
School for 30 years. Mr. Rice continued to live in Norton until 2007, when he moved to Washington State.
Melvin participated in many community activities in Norton. He was charter member of the Prairie Powder Packers, a black
powder gun club, and was a member of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, the Norton United Methodist
Church and the American Legion. For many years he announced high school sporting events and as a junior sponsor, put
on many NCHS proms.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joan Rice, sister Mary Lois Hausler and his parents.
He is survived by daughters Lori (Mitchell) Powlas of Everett, WA and Diane (Ed) Taylor of Roseville, CA and by
grandchildren Cpt. Timothy (Rachel) Powlas of Clarksville, TN, Philip Taylor of Honolulu, HI and Erin Taylor of Turlock, CA.

A Memorial service will be held September 25 at 1:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Norton, Kansas.
