July 8, 1945, Tony was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and beloved great-grandfather.
He was a man of many admirable qualities. He had a wonderful sense of humor, always ready with a
clever joke or lighthearted story that brought laughter to those around him. His intellect and creative
mind allowed him to excel in his profession and approached life's challenges with ingenuity and
resourcefulness.
Family was of utmost importance to Tony. He was a loyal and dedicated spouse to his beloved wife, Julie
Asuncion. Together, they created a nurturing and loving home for their children, Craig and Rene
Asuncion. Tony adored his role as a grandfather to Chevera Moor, Liana Criscuoli, Castor and Alaka
Vosburgh, Nicole Oberlander, Roger Aguirre, Oliver and Elliot Asuncion. He took great joy in watching his
family grow through the generations and was overjoyed to become a great-grandfather to Orion and
Oneill Smith, Milo and Otto Moor, and Christian Oberlander.
Tony was preceded in death by his dear brother, Benjamin Asuncion, his parents, Teofilo and Florentina
Asuncion, and his grandparents, Pedro and Antonia Sugitan. The memories of these loved ones will
forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and treasured them.
Tony grew up on the Island of Lana’i, Hawaii. There he graduated from Lana'i High School, class of 1963.
Throughout his life, his childhood friends and classmates supported and experienced every milestone
with him. This loyalty was seen in all aspects of his life.
Tony proudly served his country as a member of the Air Force, where he made valuable contributions
and earned the distinction of being a Vietnam Veteran. His time in the military shaped him into the
patriotic and commendable individual he was known to be.
Tony's career showed his diverse talents. He began as a computer technician at the Los Angeles Herald
Examiner. Following, he dedicated 30+ years as an elevator mechanic for Los Angeles County,
demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his craft.
But it wasn't all work for Tony! He had many hobbies that kept him entertained. Golfing was his way of
teeing off stress, while panning for gold brought out his inner treasure hunter. Tony was often found in
his garage restoring vintage VWs to their former glory. And let's not forget his green thumb! With his
gardening and building skills he created his own paradise in his backyard. He was surrounded by his
Hawaiian roots and the trickling pond to his koi fish.
A ceremony to honor Tony's life will be held on September 28, 2023, at First Filipino American United
Methodist Church of San Gabriel Valley. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Live Oak
Memorial Park in Monrovia.
Tony's departure leaves a void in our hearts, but his spirit lives on through the laughter and joy he
brought into our lives. Tony's loving heart and unwavering devotion to his family and country will be
cherished and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence will be deeply
