Miss you Neal, Dave Campos here. I was an Explorer in the early 70's.

I was a police explorer with a different agency in the '80s.  I met Chief Johnson through the explorer academy, which he was very involved at that time. I was always impressed with how he treated everyone he met, with his good nature and by how hard he worked at the academy. Even though there were other staff around, he was always busy. 
It was a blessing and an honor to have met Chief Johnson. Even though it has been over 30 years since I last saw him, I remember him with great respect and admiration.

A tremendous leader and friend, who meant so much to those of us growing up under his guidance.  You are missed.

In Arcadia, if someone said "Chief" you knew that Neal was in the room.  From the time I was 16, Neal was my mentor and very close friend.  He was always there for me and trusted me.  I miss him deeply.  Even now, months later I cannot believe he is gone.  Thanks you for allowing me to be part of your family.  We have lost truly a great Friend.

My deepest condolences to the Johnson family.  Patrolman, Sgt., and then Lieutenant, covers  when I was privileged to have been one of many kids/young adults in the 60's and 70's that benefited from his endearing love for wanting to shape young minds into future good and responsible citizens.  I hope those that were privileged to have experienced his leadership, will endeavor to carry out what Neal set out to instill in their lives to those whom they care about.
  Neal is with us forever in our Hearts and Minds as he was our Mentor.

My deepest condolences to the entire family. Neal left his mark on the community and all of Southern California Law Enforcement. He will be missed. He was one of the greatest men I've ever met.

Johnson Family, I met Neal back in 1979 when I too was a police explorer at WCPD and went thru the Police Explorer Academy at Arcadia High School.  Neal was always a firm/strict leader but was great at teaching us at the academy.  When I became an advisor he gave me his home number to call him anytime I had a question or a problem.

He was a great leader and will always be remembered as one of the best.

This candle was lit in tribute to the bright light that has been dimmed, We will see Neal again and follow his bright light home to out father and all be reunited. God bless Neal and his family.

I will never forget you Neal, starting when I was in the academy until we worked together at Pomona USD Police. We had many great conversations and good times. I learned a lot from you and will always remember you. I pray for your wife and family and know that you are in a better place, making way for the rest of us. From the time I met him in 1967, Neal Johnson was a strong and positive influence in my life. Neal regularly opened his home to young people, where I spent most Sunday evenings with my friends in the Chariots Car Club.  It was there that many of us learned our first lessons about community service. To this day I am grateful to Neal and, maybe more so, to Norma and their kids for their willingness to share him.

Bill and I are saddened to hear about Neal's passing. He's been a light in our lives since 1970, and a positive influence in so very many lives. We remember him with fondness and love always. Oh! And that canary yellow Gold Wing! Hugs to you.

I was one of many young teenagers 50 years ago that Neal mentored.  In this case it was the Chariots Car Club in the Temple City area. Wonderful man.

I knew Neal my entire life and considered his son Roger my best friend. Short of my parents nobody had as much influence on my growing up. Be it as a neighbor, one of his cub & boy scouts or police explores he was always there. His encouragement towards becoming a police officer. His reaching out to help people and families in need. I remember him taking me on a family vacation for a whole month because at the time it was something I needed in my life. I was included with the family for Big Bear weekends. And no matter what was always expected to stop by at Christmas to share greetings and a the ever present fruit cake.  I wish I could put into words how much I feel for Normas, Terry, Neal Jr, Jerry and Rodgers loss...........

I am saddened to hear of the loss of such a formidable individual.  I first met Mr. Johnson in 1974 when I was a police explorer Lt. at the explorer academy.  I remember getting a stern lecture from him because some of us leaders were goofing around at the academy and he would not tolerate it.  He had a wonderful and loving way of working with young people and even though we were in a bit of trouble for goofing around, Mr. Johnson's "reprimand" was given with love and we could feel that love.  I then got reaquainted with him in 1989 when I came to work in the Arcadia City Manager's office while he was the Chief of Police.  I had the pleasure of working near him for five years and I really got to experience his huge personality and his love of police work and young people.  I remember him giving me a tour of his RV one day and how he talked about traveling with his wife and family.  I know he will be missed by everyone who was blessed by crossing his path and knowing him.  He was one of a kind!

Terri, Dan, Jody, Jonathan and family.... Our sincere condolences to you all.  I've heard good things from Jody about her grandpa periodically over the years and now I see why.  He looks like an amazing man and I wish I could have met him.  I recently lost my mother which gives me deep sympathy for you.  I'm so very sorry for your losses and wish that life didn't have the painful sting of death.  Thankful, however,  that Neal now knows the full measure of joy in Jesus' presence.

I had the pleasure of meeting the chief when I worked for him at a national BSA jamboree years ago. Because of his kindness and fairness ,I agreed to serve under him at 6 jamborees. I have been an agent with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for over 40 years and the influence the chief has had on me and my law enforcement career has been tremendous. Chief, you have had a positive influence on the life of many people. I am one of those. I thank you for your friendship,your contribution to the many young folks who have crossed your path and the service to your city.

I never had the pleasure of meeting you but have heard a lot of wonderful memories of your life and legacy.  Blessings and prayers for the whole family...

Thoughts, prayers and respect for a wonderful caring person and his family.

Neal was always so accessible to anyone in Arcadia who needed his help. I was fortunate to have met him as an employee at the district office of Arcadia USD. His great example was carried forward by his son, Roger, whom I later met in Monrovia. The family should be proud of such a tremendous tradition, although words cannot ease the grief at this time. Please know that he was very much appreciated throughout the community.

Thanks, for all you did for me as an explorer and young man. We will miss you!

I've always referred to Neal as the person who most influenced me to become a police officer.  I noted his way of dealing with young people in his car club advisory role as well as his work in Scouting.  My father (who retired from Arcadia Fire in the late 70's) always referred to Neal as "public servant in the best meaning of the word".  While I was serving in Vietnam in 1967-68, Norma Jean's Cub Scout Pack sent 2 pound coffee cans of cookies to me weekly and the members of my platoon loved them.  In my career as a Police Officer, I regularly reflected back on what I had observed of Neal when he was a Sergeant and followed his career through the Arcadia Tribune to his appointment as Chief of Police.  He was what community policing was about before the term was vogue.  Unfortunately I am in southeast Asia on business and cannot attend the services but my thoughts and prayers are with Norma, his children and grandchildren.  He was a wonderful man.

I first met "Chief" in 1976 when I attended the Explorer academy. Even as my career took me to agencies other that his Arcadia PD, he always showed an interest in me and my career. This big bear of a man was always approachable, friendly and willing to offer career advice without any of the arrogance of many of his peers. He truly believed in the old fashioned concept of community service and was an inspiration to a young cop. Blessings to the Johnson family on your loss.

Neal, I met you many years ago when I dated your son Jerry's sister in the late 70's. As a Navy Sailor you impressed me from our first meeting. You raised two wonderful sons who followed in your footsteps as Police Officers, one making Chief of Police and the other a Detective Sergeant, both of them retired, as myself too. I'm so glad I got to see you when you visited family in the Northwest and the last dinner we shared together only a couple months ago. Your life touched more people than you know, including mine. It was my pleasure knowing you for the past 40 years. You will be missed but not forgotten. May you rest in peace and be with the Lord.
