Dr Harry M. Pretty

C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous faisons part du décès du Dr Harry Pretty survenu le 20 janvier 2023, à l’âge de 86 ans. Il était le fils de feu M. Henry Gurth Pretty et de feu Mme Jeanne Boyer.

Il laisse dans le deuil sa tendre épouse Cécile Desjardins, son fils Patrick (Dominique), ses enfants par alliance Richard (Denise), Monique (Benoit), Julie (Luc) et Benoit (Caroline), ses frères Louis (Pauline), John (Delma) et Peter (Hélène), ses petits-enfants Marc, Maxime (Marie-Ève), Alexie et Zélia ainsi que son arrière-petite-fille Amélie.

À titre de médecin en hémato-oncologie, il a pratiqué à l’Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal, à l’Hôtel-Dieu de St-Jérôme et à l’hôpital de Ste-Agathe-des-Monts jusqu’à sa retraite bien méritée en 2013. Il a toujours été reconnu par ses patients et ses collègues pour sa grande accessibilité et son approche humaniste. En plus de porter un grand intérêt aux soins des malades ainsi que pour les sciences de laboratoire, il a donné de nombreuses conférences sur tous les aspects de la maladie cancéreuse, tant aux personnes atteintes qu’à leur famille. Il a également fondé l’un des premiers groupes d’entraide pour personnes atteintes du cancer, Vie nouvelle.

Grâce à son écoute, son approche originale et ses habiletés hors du commun, de très nombreux patients, souvent venus de loin, on put retrouver espoir, santé ou plusieurs années de plus dans ce monde.

Nous retiendrons de lui sa grande sagesse ainsi que sa générosité envers tous ceux et celles qu’il aimait.

Une célébration de sa vie sera tenue au printemps.

Un don peut être fait à sa mémoire à la Société canadienne du cancer ou à la fondation Pallia-vie de St-Jérôme.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Harry Pretty on January 20, 2023, at the age of 86. He was the son of the late Mr. Henry Gurth Pretty and the late Mrs. Jeanne Boyer.

He is survived by his loving wife Cécile Desjardins, his son Patrick (Dominique), his children by marriage Richard (Denise), Monique (Benoit), Julie (Luc) and Benoit (Caroline), his brothers Louis (Pauline), John (Delma) and Peter (Hélène), his grandchildren Marc, Maxime (Marie-Ève), Alexie and Zélia as well as his great granddaughter Amélie.

As a physician in hemato-oncology, he practiced at the Hôtel-Dieu of Montréal, at the Hôtel-Dieu of St-Jérôme and at the Ste-Agathe-des-Monts Hospital until his deserved retirement in 2013. He has always been recognized by his patients and colleagues for his great accessibility and his humanistic approach. In addition to taking a great interest in the care of patients as well as in laboratory sciences, he has given numerous conferences on all aspects of the cancerous disease, both to people with cancer and to their families. He also founded one of the first support groups for people with cancer, Vie nouvelle.

Thanks to his listening, his original approach and his extraordinary skills, many patients, often from far away, were able to find hope, health or several more years in this world.

We will remember his great wisdom and his generosity towards all those he loved.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
