Barbara was born on January 27, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, to Libby and Gene Frech. She graduated from Banks High School in 1972 and Auburn University in 1976. While attending Auburn, Barbara was a cheerleader, Miss Fall Rush, and a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. After graduating from Auburn with a major in education, she taught at Briarwood Christian School.
Barbara married her husband, Jim, in 1985 and enjoyed a life filled with children, grandchildren, friends, and travel. She and Jim were blessed with many special trips with their children, most recently skiing with their four precious grandchildren. Barbara taught bible studies for 18 years and especially enjoyed time learning and studying with other women. Her desire to learn more led her to take Greek classes and gain further understanding about God’s Word. Barbara is survived by her husband of 41 years, Jim Nevins; children, Caylen Schlitz (Ryne) and Holder Nevins (Abby); grandchildren, Emmy Schlitz, Parker Schlitz, Sam Nevins, and Avery Nevins. She is also survived by her sisters along with several nieces and nephews.
Barbara will not only be remembered for her sense of humor, but also for the many songs and encouraging scriptures she placed in the hearts of her children and grandchildren. Barbara and her family extend special thanks to Dr. Marty Heslin as he was not only her physician, but became a close family friend.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Mountain Brook Community Church at 11 a.m. The family will welcome friends and family for visitation at 9:30 a.m.
