Sammy Ray Acker, a humble servant of the Lord and a steward of His creation, was called to his eternal home on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born on April 1, 1938 in Boothton, AL. Sammy's life was a testament to the virtues of kindness, love, and an unwavering faith.
He leaves behind a legacy of love in the hearts of his devoted wife, Sue Acker; son, James (Tonia) Acker; daughter, Delbra (Barney) Ireland; grandson, Preston Acker and a host of other family members. His life was a beacon of the familial love that binds us all. A love that now mourns his passing yet celebrates the reunion with his heavenly family: his father, James B. Acker; mother, Gladys Acker; siblings, Daniel Acker, Mabel Murphy, Irene Parker, and Michael (Mickey) Acker, who preceded him in death.
Sammy's education journey began at Boothton then to Mayberry School and ended at Montevallo High School, after which he answered the call of duty, serving in the Army with dedication for 2 years active service followed by 4 years in the reserve. His commitment to his country was paralleled only by his commitment to his community through his work at Griffin Wheel, where for 35 years, he diligently manufactured train wheels, ensuring the safe passage of countless souls.
His worship was rooted in gratitude and respect for all God's creation, a journey of faith that led him from Mayberry Baptist to Antioch Baptist. Sammy's service as a Deacon at Mayberry Baptist was marked by humility and a deep reverence for the sacred duties entrusted to him. His hobbies reflected his love for the Lord's work; tending to his garden and embracing the fellowship of his church family, he cultivated not just the Earth but also the spirit of community.
As we bid farewell to Sammy Ray Acker, let us honor his memory by emulating his gratitude for life's blessings, his respect for all creation, and his unwavering faith in the Almighty.
