Alfred “Len” Evans, 50, native Texan and a resident of Montgomery, went peacefully into the arms of his Savior and Lord in the early hours of January 27, 2020. He was born in New Braunfels, TX on September 4, 1969. Len spent most of his formative years attending Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church, where he received his calling to the ministry. He was an avid softball pitcher, went on several mission trips, and led youth covenant groups. Len graduated high school from Alabama Christian Academy where he also played football and made All-City. Len married Tonja Park in May 1991 and after receiving his undergraduate degree from Auburn University at Montgomery, pursued his call to the ministry and further theological studies at Dallas Theological Seminary where he earned his Master of Christian Education. Upon graduating, he served as Youth Director in several northern churches before moving back to Lubbock, TX. Len published a youth study guide on 1 Timothy before embarking with Youth Specialties and the National Network of Youth Ministries, mentoring and connecting youth leaders while offering seminars on the principles of youth leadership. He also served as a Hospice Chaplain. In 2018, Len returned to the Alabama West Florida Conference where he has served as Youth Director to Dalraida UMC and part-time local pastor to Farmersville UMC, Hopewell UMC, McWilliams UMC, and Pine Apple UMC. Prior to his passing, Len was also working as Chaplain with Encompass Rehab. Len was an avid fan of the Red Sox & Marvel Comics. He was a collector and found value in uniqueness. He loved to wear quirky socks & ties, and post thought-provoking dialogues on social media. One of Len’s greatest attributes was being a “connector.” He found much satisfaction in personal vulnerability and bringing people together in community. Len loved the Lord Jesus Christ and is survived by his father, Alfred V. Evans Jr., his two daughters, Sarabeth Evans, Hannah Taylor Walker and son-in-law, Andy Walker; his former wife, Tonja Park Evans; two aunts, one uncle, numerous cousins, as well as the following: extended family in love, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Solze, and the entire Chapman family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Downes Evans. Len will be dearly missed.
Visitation will be held at Leak Memory Chapel this Friday, January 31, 2020, from 5-7pm. A celebration of life will follow on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Dalraida United Methodist Church located at 3817 Atlanta Hwy Montgomery, Al, starting at 11am with Rev. Michael Cobb, Rev. Allen Newton, and Rev. Keith Waldrop officiating. A time of fellowship will immediately follow in the Fellowship Hall of Dalraida UMC. The family would like to encourage all in attendance to wear something reminiscent of Len, albeit a baseball jersey, Star Wars or Marvel attire, even socks with personality. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that consideration be given to Dalraida UMC Youth Missions.
