Born in Newport News, Virginia to the late Louise Robertson Aident and Aubrey Epes Robertson Sr., Epes graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News. He majored in history at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia and graduated in 1960. He was an active member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. While at Randolph-Macon he met the love of his life, Sheila Ann Galloway, who attended Longwood College.
The two married in the fall of 1960 and lived in Richmond, Virginia until Epes was transferred with IBM to Montgomery, Alabama in 1968. Sheila and Epes celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in September of this year.
During his 33 year career at IBM, Epes received numerous awards for sales performance and leadership including 27 100% Clubs and six Golden Circles, as well as National State Manager of the Year. Epes was involved in and on the boards of varied civic organizations including the Capital City Rotary Club, Montgomery Area Cancer Society, Auburn University College of Education Advisory Council. Epes was a longtime member of Frazer Church.
Epes mentored many younger persons as they developed careers at IBM and elsewhere, and took special delight in those friendships.
A lifelong lover of the water, Epes was an avid fisherman and boater, growing up on the bank of the James River. He provided his family with countless fond memories of weekends on the water at beautiful Lake Martin, spectacular views of the wide James River during many trips to Newport News, and fishing outings ranging from local lakes and ponds to the Gulf, Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
Sending three daughters to Auburn, Epes was a loyal supporter of Auburn University. He also faithfully followed his beloved Randolph-Macon Yellowjackets.
Epes is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sheila Galloway Robertson, three daughters, Susan Robertson Sturdivant (Jim), Cindy Robertson Bishop (Jim), Anne Robertson Holmes (Beau), seven grandchildren, Robert Aubrey Sturdivant (Brittany), Adam Bailey Sturdivant (Cassidy), Daniel Kyle Sturdivant, Thomas Wesley Sturdivant, James Samuel Bishop, William Galloway Holmes (Amelia), and Virginia Anne Holmes, and two great-grandchildren, Adeline Cate Sturdivant, and James Hays Sturdivant.
