Bennett Earl Shaw passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, from congestive heart failure. He was 84 years old. Bennett was born in Rockford, AL on July 19, 1935, and his family moved to Montgomery when he was a boy. He was a 1953 graduate of Sidney Lanier High School, and honorably discharged from the United States Army in September 1960, after serving a two-year tour of duty in Germany.
After his military service Bennett followed in his older brother Joel’s footsteps, and became a welder/machinist at Capital City Machine Works, where he worked until retirement in 2000.
During his life, Bennett had numerous hobbies and interests that usually centered around rooting for all things Crimson Tide. He also enjoyed square-dancing, and playing Scrabble, Pinochle and Bingo. There weren’t many times he ever turned down good food, and often said, “You can call me anything, just don’t call me late for supper.” His love of good Southern food began in his toddler years when he told his family, “My name is Benny Earl ‘Hall’ and I want a biscuit.”
There was only one first name on his birth certificate, but at times during his life he was also known as Kat, Benny and The Dean.
Bennett was predeceased by his parents (Alta Cary and Docia Beatrice Colquitt Shaw), his sister Ollie Dell Gradwell (Jack), and two brothers Hunter Owen Shaw (Marie), and Joel Cary Shaw (Sarah).
