Betty Jane Hughes

Hughes, Betty (Janie) Jane 81, a longtime resident of Montgomery, died peacefully on September 1, 2021 after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert S Richburg and Willie Mae Richburg and her brother Joseph R Richburg (Joan). She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James Larry Hughes; her daughter, Laurie Turner (Neal), her two sons James L. “Bubba” Hughes Jr and Mike Hughes (Karen). She was known as “Memaw” or “Meme” by her loving granddaughters Sarah Foreman (Brian), Amanda Cruikshank (Josh), Lauren Young (Bryan), Autumn Hughes and great grandchildren Kathrine, Connor, Avery, Jayce, Beck and Everleigh.

Janie was born in Montgomery, Alabama on December 23,1939. She graduated from Robert E. Lee H.S.

in 1957. After working for the State of Alabama for a couple of years she went to work for the federal government at Maxwell AFB and Gunter AFB where she retired after a long career. She was a member of Chisholm Baptist Church and enjoyed many friendships with fellow members. Janie was a wonderful, loving and hard working wife, mother and grandmother. Her playful humor and sweet smile will be missed.

Visitation will be held at Leak Memory Funeral Home on Thursday, September 9th beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a graveside to follow at 11:00 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Keith Waldrop officiating.
