Betty Viola Hutchens

Betty was born October 7, 1931. She graduated from St. Margaret’s School of Nursing in 1953. She worked as a County Health nurse and worked for various doctors in the Montgomery area. She then worked for Dr. Felix Tankersley for over 30 years before she retired in 2003 at the age of 72. She always held a lifelong desire to care for others.

She was also a long-time devoted member of St. James Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert Walker and Birdie Viola Hassell Martin; her husband of 60 years, James Marion Hutchens; her son, Stephen Walker Hutchens; her sister, Gertrude Evelyn Martin Penton; and her nephew, David Martin Penton.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Christine C. Hutchens; her grandchildren Austin Taylor Hutchens (Juliet) and James Payton Hutchens; her niece Barbara Penton Helton; and her nephew Michael Donnis Penton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. James Church, 9045 Vaughn Road, Montgomery, AL 36117.

A friends and family visitation for Betty will be held Friday, December 1, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109. Following the friends and family visitation will be a graveside service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Rose Hill Cemetery, 960 North Ann Avenue, Tallassee, AL 36078.
