Bobby Rae “Bob” Kelley, 89, of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Bob will be remembered for his humility, good humor, and unwavering kindness.
Born in Coosa County, Alabama, Bob graduated from Weogufka High School, where he served as Class President, and went on to earn a business degree from Jacksonville State University, where he was twice voted Class Favorite. In 1959, he married the love of his life, Sarah Frances Winn. Together, they shared 65 beautiful years of marriage and raised a close-knit family grounded in faith and love.
After beginning his career at Alabama Gas Company in Anniston, Bob transitioned to Alabama Power Company in 1965, moving his young family to Birmingham. He retired as Southern Division Customer Service Manager in Montgomery after a long and dedicated career. He also proudly served in the National Guard from 1956 to 1964.
Bob lived a life of service, leadership, and community engagement. A 53-year Kiwanian, he served as President of the Birmingham Club and later as a cherished member of the Montgomery Club, where he earned the rare distinction of 50 years of perfect attendance. He especially enjoyed helping host the annual State Fair.
Bob and Sarah were faithful members of both Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church in Birmingham and later Frazer Methodist Church in Montgomery, where Bob held multiple leadership positions. He and Sarah have been active members of Sunday School Classes their entire adult lives.
He found joy in simple pleasures—jogging, fishing, playing tennis and golf—and treasured every moment spent with his family. His children remain profoundly changed by the example he set loving God wholeheartedly and putting others first. To his grandchildren, he was “Daddy Bob,” the source of corny jokes, steady encouragement, and unconditional love.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Pearl Kelley. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah; daughter Lea King (Leslie); son Matt Kelley (Jennifer); and grandchildren: Tripp King, Connor King, Matthew Kelley, Kathleen Kelley, Hannah Kelley, Laura Kelley, and Claire Kelley.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at Frazer Church on Saturday, June 21, 2025, with a visitation at 1:00 p.m. and service at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to John Ed Mathison Leadership Ministries in honor of Bob Kelley’s lifelong devotion to faith and service.
