Davis Henry’s priorities were faith, family, friends, and farming. He attended the Liberty Church of Christ where he served as elder many years. He presently attended Vaughn Park Church of Christ. He helped others quietly, often anonymously.
Davis excelled in farming almost from birth. He raised goats, calves, pigs, chickens, horses, and beef cattle. His fondest love was dairy cattle. He won awards for cattle exhibiting and judging. He was selected Southern Regional Star Farmer in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), was Lanier High School’s FFA Chapter president, and served as an adult leader in local 4-H Livestock Clubs. He received the Master Dairyman award, the 2009 Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame Award, and the Alabama Century & Heritage Farm Designation when Twin Oaks Farm celebrated its100th anniversary in 2019.
Other leadership roles included election as Montgomery County Farmers Federation president. He held offices in the Dairy Herd Improvement Association, was a director and president of the Montgomery County Cattlemen’s Association as well as various cattle breed associations. He was the chairman of the board of the Montgomery Farmers Cooperative. As an innovator in crop and timber production, he received soil and water conservation awards. Davis cared for God’s creation entrusted to him.
Education mattered to Davis. He graduated Lanier High School, attended Auburn University, and Huntington College. His education was interrupted by military service in the U.S. Army 176th AAA Missile Battalion operating launch systems for Nike missiles. He was a founding member of the West Montgomery Educational Foundation, Chairman of the Board of Hooper Academy, and President of Hooper’s Booster Club. The school honored him for his service by naming its football field “Davis Henry Field.”
As a family leader, Davis encouraged his five children to love God, work hard, study hard, care for friends, and lead others. He worked, served, and played with his children. He taught them how to halter-break yearlings, groom show cattle, ride horses, operate farm equipment, support family, help friends, and coach sports teams.
Davis did not preach, but his life encouraged many to be leaders in their faith, in their families, in their vocations, and in their community. He honored God by working in His creation to minister to His people.
