

Elida Cuellar Brown was born in Floresville, Texas on October 10, 1913 and died in Montgomery, Alabama on September 24, 2012. She graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsland, Texas and taught school for several years. World War II brought many changes, and in January 1943 she volunteered for the Navy WAVES and served as a Navy officer until the war ended. After initial training she was assigned to the Navy Department in Washington, D.C.
After the war Elida moved to Montgomery where her sister, Dora Alice, had settled. She worked for the State of Alabama, including many years with the State Forestry Commission as Personnel Director, retiring in 1978.
In 1965 she married T. Monte Brown of Montgomery. She is survived by a step-son, William W. Brown of Hanover, MD and a step-daughter, Margery Brown Fulton of Preston, MS; two grandsons, Thomas Brown of Springfield, VA and Timothy Brown of Severn, MD; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Adolph and Dora Cuellar; two brothers, Adolph and Ted Cuellar; and two sisters, Dora Alice Malone and Lillian Leveque. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Elida was a devoted charter member of Our Lady Queen of Mercy Catholic Church. She enjoyed participating in the "Keen Agers" church group and in activities of P.E.O. for many years. She was an avid world traveler when she was in good health and enjoyed sharing memories of her travel adventures with friends and family.
Funeral Services will be Friday, September 28, 2012 at 11:30 AM from Our Lady Queen of Mercy Catholic Church with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady Queen of Mercy Catholic Church Adoration Chapel Fund or to Hospice of Montgomery.
