George is preceded in death by his parents, George Ray Herring and Annie Mae Hoffman Herring.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Helen Muriel Brady Herring; his daughter, Terri Lynn Herring; his son, Coy Brady Herring; and his sisters, Sara Herring Allgood, Martha Herring Pope, and Dorothy Herring Curry.
George served in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He went on to teach for 15 years.
He enjoyed Alabama football, fishing, gardening, spending time with his family, and doing volunteer work with elementary school children.
George earned several medals during his tenure in the Air Force, including a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with 4 devices, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 6 devices, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award with 6 devices, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 device, Airman of the Month, Airman of the Year, Top Recruiter month after month, and Recruiter of the Year for multiple year in a row.
