

PAPPANASTOS, Dr. Georgia, 82, a resident of Montgomery, AL, and formerly of Milwaukee, WI, fell asleep in the Lord on May 26, 2013. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents George and Virginia, her brothers John and Arthur, her sister-in-law Dodie, and her nephew George. She is survived by her dear sister-in-law Irene; her nephews and nieces: Johnny, Donna, Zack, Kim, Paul, Julie, Ed, Jaymie, and Gina; twelve great nephews and nieces: Nick, Paige, Gabe, Carly, Chloe, Ryan, Andy, Rachel, Alexa, Joey, Zack and Seven; and other dear relatives and friends.
Dr. Pappanastos was a 1965 graduate of The University of Alabama where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and named the Distinguished Undergraduate Scholar of the College of Arts and Sciences. After receiving her M.A. from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and her Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky, she joined the faculty of Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. She taught there for 25 years, served as Assistant Chair and later Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and retired in 1994 with the “Emerita” designation. She returned to Montgomery in 1996 and became an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation where she served as Choir Director and Secretary and Treasurer of the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society (Friends of the Poor).
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Leak-Memory Chapel, with a Trisayion service at 6:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, 1721 Mt. Meigs Rd., with the Rev. Fr. Ioannis Vernikos officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with Leak Memory Chapel directing. Pallbearers will be her four nephews Johnny, Zack, Paul, and Ed Pappanastos, and her six great nephews Nick, Gabe, Ryan, Andy, Joey, and Zack Pappanastos. Honorary pallbearers will be John Nick Pappanastos, Jimmy Pappanastos, and Louis Voulgarides (her cousins), Edward Xides, George Germanos, Charles Manikas and George Azar.
